The Department of History is one of the leading History departments in South Africa. It is currently at the forefront in teaching and research in visual, public and social history. The Department is committed to developing new critical interpretations in the research and teaching of history.

Areas of specialization in the Department are women and gender studies, public history, visual history, land and agrarian history, liberation history, urban history, African history, and teacher education.

The courses offered by the Department are designed to provide students with critical insights around the writing and re-writing of history and textual analysis. Our courses are directed at transformation in society particularly in the education, land and heritage sectors.

The Department of History also offers a number of survey courses that serve to introduce students to broad comparative and interdisciplinary themes. At Postgraduate level there are programmes in Historical Studies, Public History, Visual History, Museum and Heritage Studies, and Land and Agrarian Studies.

The accredited historical journal, Kronos, is edited by the Department. The journal promotes high quality, interdisciplinary research, and breaks new ground by integrating visuals and texts.
