Biography

I graduated from the University of Natal, Howard College campus with PhD in Chemistry with a specialization in organometallic chemistry. This was in the year 2003. I then proceeded to resume my lectureship at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya. I returned to South Africa soon afterwards and took up an appointment as a senior lecturer at the then University of Transkei. I later transferred my services to the University of the Western Cape.  At the University of the Western Cape, I have graduated PhD, MSc and honours students. I have also mentored several final year undergraduates.
Basically, our group is involved in: Synthesis and characterization of some biomedical nanocomposites (Quantum Dots and Nanoparticles).
Designing and developing new synthetic methods for the preparation of imino derivative organometallic complexes with novel reactivity and physical/structural properties.
Designing and developing bimetallic complexes containing different metals with different potentials and linked together by suitably conjugated ligands may act as good electronic bridges, molecular wires/switches or one-dimensional conductors.
Investigating the C-H activation materials for oxidation catalysis
Investigating the use of the above transition metal compounds as dendritic scaffolds for oligomerization/polymerization reactions
To model these compounds by means of molecular mechanics calculations and investigate their energetic favorability.
Investigating the use of the above materials in the area of catalysis, Medical diagnostics and novel materials.
We are also involved in the nanomaterials work. Specifically, we do the syntheses and characterization of some biomedical nanocomposites (Quantum Dots and Nanoparticles). The nanoparcticles include the SPIONS. We then  collaborate with the biolabels platform in biotechnology (UWC) unit which is supported by the  National Innovation Centre hosted at Mintek SA to prepare the nanocrystals called quantum dots of known functionalization and concentration for use in diseases diagnostic experiments.
