Special Collections

MISSION
The mission of Special Collections is to support UWC in fulfilling its research, teaching and learning goals by collecting, preserving and making accessible primary resource material of unique and enduring research value to graduates, faculty and other researchers.


 

COLLECTIONS

The collection focuses on a broad spectrum of subjects with particular strengths in the areas of socio-political history. The collection includes:

  • UWC Theses and Dissertations
  • UWC research publications – this collection consists of all research done and published at the University
  • Inaugural lectures
  • The South African Studies collection. This is an interdisciplinary collection of South African material with particular strength in the subject areas of South African socio-political and economic history and biographical works from the 19th century to the present.
  • Government publications. The following Government publications form part of the collection.
    • Commission Reports
    •  HSRC Reports 
    • Statistics South Africa Reports 
    • White papers

 


  

 

Material housed in Special Collections can be accessed by means of the UWC online catalogue. It is a closed-access collection restricted to in-house use only. To safeguard the unique collection researchers are obliged to comply with the reading room rules. No bags are allowed in the reading room area. Student cards must be presented to the librarian when material is requested.

SERVICES 

 

Reference Services

  • Special Collection staff provide reference services at the reference desk on Level 12.
  • Staff assist users with identifying and locating material of interest and answering questions about holdings. Orientation is given to outside groups. It includes general information about the collection and how to use the collection effectively.
  • Telephonic reference assistance to users is also provided. Users may also direct queries by email to the Special Collections librarian.
     

Photocopying

All photocopying of material is subject to copyright regulations.


 

CATALOGUE


Material held in this section is indicated as such on the Library catalogue (OPAC). Access to the online catalogue is also available on level 12.


LOCATION AND OPENING HOURS


The Special Collections section is situated on Level 12 of the UWC Main Library
Hours of service are Monday through Friday : 08h20 – 16h30. After hours requests for special collection material will be handled by the staff on duty at the Information Desk on level 6.
