Desmond Tutu Research Chair in Religion and Social Justice

UWC is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sarojini Nadar (NRF B rated scholar) as the Desmond Tutu Research Chair in Religion and Social Justice, under a bilateral cooperation agreement between the National Research Foundation SARCHI initiative and the Lund Mission Society. The purpose of the Desmond Tutu Research Chair in Religion and Social Justice will be to develop and promote advanced research that examines the ways in which religious and faith traditions challenge or hold resources for social justice imperatives that produce sustainable societies. Based on the premise of the power of faith, religion and cultural traditions to determine and prescribe social norms for matters relating to social justice - how we treat other humans and the natural, financial and physical resources which we have - the Desmond Tutu Research Chair in Religion and Social Justice will explore how religious traditions may support or hinder quests for creating and sustaining justice. Such research on the authority and power of religious traditions in maintaining normative social, and cultural ideals about just ways of relating with humanity and the environment can produce important knowledge about how to create sustainable societies.
