Call for Papers: Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in PSET: TVET Studies

Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in PSET: TVET Studies

Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in PSET: TVET Studies

Deadline for application: 7th January 2018

Introduction

The Institute for Post-School Studies (IPSS) is an institute of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) located within the Faculty of Education, and includes studies in higher education, adult education and vocational education under its umbrella. The IPSS is committed to strengthening research capacity and the knowledge base on post-schooling in South African and on the African continent, through relevant research and post-graduate programmes. Under the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARCHi) funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), the University of the Western Cape was recently awarded a Research Chair: PSET (TVET studies), of which Prof Joy Papier is the Chair holder and leads the research programme. The post-doctoral appointee will therefore be attached to the Research Chair.

‘Post-schooling’ is part of an emerging discourse in South Africa. It is important to note that ‘post-school studies’ is not a cognate field of study but comprises at least three established academic domains (internationally, if not entirely locally as yet): technical and vocational education and training (TVET); Adult education; and higher education. While each of these three domains has its own academic traditions, research priorities, and distinguishing features, there are significant areas of intersection and inter-face which are critical for creating seamless transitions and developing learning pathways for a wide range of learners. The challenges of the post-school sector (as it has been constructed in South Africa) cannot therefore be addressed in isolation, as post-schooling is the nexus at which pathways for youth and adults outside of formal general schooling converge.

The award of the Research Chair (TVET) enables a strong focus on vocational education and training, and the intention is to grow both the knowledge base on teaching and learning in TVET, and the capacity for research within TVET colleges. In addition, building a strong vocational community of practice, producing empirical research, and delivering high quality postgraduate programmes are important goals of the Chair’s research programme into the future.

The IPSS therefore invites one (1) Post-doctoral research fellow in the field of TVET studies to be appointed as of 1st February, 2018.
