Call for papers: Literacy, Language and Social Justice in Changing Academia

What counts as literacy? Who gets to take part? What’s at stake? And how do big trends like globalisation affect all that? Writing a paper about any of that? Then there’s a special issue of CrisTaL that could use your input.

What counts as literacy? Who gets to take part? What’s at stake? And how do big trends like globalisation affect all that? Writing a paper about any of that? Then there’s a special issue of CrisTaL that could use your input.

Critical Studies in Teaching and Learning (CriSTaL) is calling for papers – conceptual or empirical – for a special issue critically engaging with literacy, language and social justice in higher education.

How do we expand notions of literacy? Why is it so difficult to dislodge anglonormative notions of the student writer in the academy? How does context shape literary practices? And how can we reimagine literacy and language for socially just, creative practices.

CriSTaL, an open access journal launched at UWC, [https://www.uwc.ac.za/News/Pages/Open-Access--Journal-Launches-.aspx]  invites papers that critically engage with these questions, or otherwise problematize simplistic notions of literacy in the University.

For interested authors: the editors request that you send a 500-word abstract to the managing editor - Dr. Sherran Clarence (cristaljournal@gmail.com) - on or before March 2016. The abstract should clearly indicate the contribution the proposed paper will make to the issue, and where relevant set out the proposed conceptual/theoretical and methodological framing.

Full article submissions would need to be submitted online on or before 1 August 2016, and would be subject to the normal editorial and peer review processes.

Prospective contributors are advised to consult the author guidelines on the CriSTaL website for information regarding submission length and style: http://cristal.epubs.ac.za/index.php/cristal/announcement/view/2#.Vs1gWvn5jIU
