Campus Update Following The Level 1 Lockdown Announcement

Campus Update Following The Level 1 Lockdown Announcement

(Published - 17 September 2020)

Dear Colleagues and Students,

Please note that the University will remain online for the rest of this year and will not have face-to-face lectures - except in cases like lab-based practicals, clinical work and other instances. Students must await letters for their possible return to access the resources on campus for online learning.

The University will continue to provide data support to enable flexible teaching and learning to continue.

The task team for the phased-in return of students, appointed by the Senate Academic Planning Committee, is busy finalising the preparations for the return of categories of vulnerable students under Level 1. The University will communicate with each student about their return. Please do not report to campus unless you have received such a communication. The task team will conduct its planning during the next two to three weeks.

Students will be expected to submit their motivation for return to residences to their respective faculties. These motivations will all be forwarded to the task team for review. The approach for residence students would be to consider vulnerable students and those students who have dire living conditions. These categories of students would have to be able to substantiate their conditions. Students are requested not to come back to residences without any communication and permits being issued to them by the University.

The University encourages residence students to remain at home to minimise numbers. Residence students should bear in mind that the structural configuration of our residences is based on the presence of social spaces, which might therefore represent a challenge and risk to student health.

The final decisions will consider all the health protocols that are necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19.

As for the return of academic and support staff, we will continue to work remotely and each faculty and department will communicate with relevant staff regarding who will be returning, but in a flexible way. Do not return to campus unless you have a communication in writing and the necessary permit to do so.

The University remains cautious in the interest of the health and safety of our students and staff.

Kind regards,

Professor Vivienne Lawack
