Election of Members of the Convocation to serve on the Council of the University of the Western Cape

of the University to serve on its Council for a period of three (3) years.

The Statute of the University of the Western Cape makes provision for two members of the Convocation

of the University to serve on its Council for a period of three (3) years.

Nominations are hereby invited for the two vacancies that will arise at the end of November 2017.

The following persons are deemed to be members of the Convocation and are eligible to participate in

the election process, either as nominators or nominees:

(1) Academic employees of the University, appointed permanently or on contract for a period of not less

than one year;

(2) The Rector, the Vice-Rectors, the Registrar, the Executive Directors and the University Librarian;

(3) Two members of the Council elected by the Council to serve on the Senate; and

(4) Graduates of the University (degree qualifications only), provided that any graduate who notifies the

Council in writing, through the Office of the Registrar, that he or she does not wish to continue to be

a member of the Convocation, ceases to be a member upon receipt of that notice by the Registrar.

Members of the Convocation are invited to nominate candidates for the Council positions by completing

the relevant nomination form obtainable from the Secretariat (secretariat@uwc.ac.za) or by downloading

it from www.uwc.ac.za

The completed form(s) should be forwarded to the address indicated below by no later than 26 April 2017.

Convocation members who do not wish to nominate a candidate but wish to participate in the election are

required to inform the Registrar in writing, via letter or e-mail, or alternatively register their vote in person

at the Convocation AGM.

The election process, which will be observed by the internal auditors of the University, is as follows:

(a) Each nomination must be signed by five (5) members of the Convocation and countersigned by the

person nominated to indicate his/her acceptance of the nomination.

(b) Each nomination must be accompanied by a one-page resumé of the nominee that includes name,

address, academic and professional qualifications, occupation, offices held now and in the past.

(c) Should more than one nomination be received, a printed ballot paper with the names of all nominated

candidates will be posted to persons who indicated that they wish to participate in the election. It will be

assumed that members of the Convocation who have not indicated that they wish to participate in such

an election process wish to abstain from voting.

(d) Ballot papers will be posted to Convocation members by 5 May 2017. Ballot papers sent via post must

reach the Registrar by 12:00 on 2 June 2017. Ballot papers may be cast in person at the Convocation

AGM on 3 June 2017 before 10:00. Only official ballot papers mailed by the Registrar will be

accepted.

(e) The candidates that receive the highest number of votes will be declared duly elected

by the Registrar, assisted by two scrutineers appointed by the President of the

Convocation or the Rector.
