UWC Council Appoints Mthunzi Mdwaba as New Chair of Council

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is pleased to announce an extention to the appointment of Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba as the new Chairperson of Council.

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba as the new Chairperson of Council. Mr Mdwaba was elected to the position by Council members at the last Council meeting for 2014, succeeding former Chairperson Mr Brian Williams, whose term ended at the end of November 2014. Mdwaba will serve as chairperson for a three-year term.

In his acceptance speech Mdwaba expressed appreciation for the opportunity afforded to him.  “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you once more for the confidence you have showed in nominating me and electing me as UWC Chairman for Council. It is truly humbling,” he said.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank our erstwhile Chairman, Mr Brian Williams, who completed his term on 30 November 2014, and our outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian O'Connell, for bringing us to this point, so Professor Tyrone Pretorius, our incoming Vice-Chancellor, can take the baton and ensure the realisation of further milestones for this very remarkable University.

These new milestones could only be achieved, Mdwaba noted, through focused and strategic partnerships. Funding and sustainability are absolutely essential ingredients in ensuring that the community of the University focuses on doing what we need to do without pain. In this regard, we are going to have to come up with very clear focused ways of leveraging our networks. Partnerships are going to be absolutely key going forward, both in defending our territory to ensure growth of existing relationships, and also in acquiring new partnerships that can take us to new heights
