The University of the Western Cape has become aware of nefarious activities related to bogus student registrations at tertiary institutions. Although it is not aware of similar practices at UWC, the Office of the Registrar is taking pre-emptive steps to warn the campus community about such illegal and criminal activity.

Recently, an operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigating Unit and Crime Intelligence led to the arrest of two people in Gauteng for illegally registering students who did not meet the requirements for admission. The pair, operating at a Johannesburg university, allegedly demanded large amounts of money from applicants who did not meet the set admission criteria by manipulating the system and awarding these students with more points for entrance to the university. The suspects are expected to appear in court today.

UWC Registrar, Nita Lawton-Misra, has personally alerted all Faculty managers and staff of the risk and has ensured that only authorised staff have access to the registration and admission systems used by the University.

“It is a huge risk and universities are vulnerable, considering that there is a large number of eligible matriculants who are desperate to gain university access. We have taken the necessary steps to ensure that selections and registration are managed by authorised staff in our faculties,” she said.

If you are aware of such illegal practices or any suspicious activity related to admissions or registrations, please inform the Office of the Registrar by email: admission@uwc.ac.za
