Update from Executive Management

Today during the lunch hour, a group of more than 200 protesting students met at the Student Centre to discuss their plan of action in support of the national shutdown. They later converged in front of the Administration building and informally indicated that they were awaiting a response on the 40 demands emailed from an anonymous Gmail account under the banner of #FeesWillFall to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Student Development and Support (DVC: SDS) for the attention of the Executive Management on 29 September 2016.

On behalf of Executive Management, the DVC: SDS had responded to the email on the same day and invited the writer/s to a multi-stakeholder engagement to discuss the demands in detail, unfortunately, there was no response to the invitation.

The group of protesting students started from the Administration Building to different areas of campus where they continued with their protest action. Following the protest action, all operations have returned to normal. We apologise to all students and staff for the disruptions today.

Please note the following:

  • The Executive Management again invites the broader student leadership to a multi-stakeholder meeting to discuss issues of concern, including the current challenges affecting the Higher Education sector.
  • We acknowledge and commend today’s non-violent protest, and we encourage University students who exercise their right to protest to respect the rights of those who choose not to participate.
The normal University business continues as scheduled, and further communication about any developments on campus will be communicated by the Executive Management.
