Urgent communication from the Acting Rector and Vice-Chancellor: COVID-19 Update

Dear Campus Community

The University of the Western Cape is tracing all those who had been in contact with the staff member who tested positive for COVID-19.

The Dean of the relevant Faculty and a small team are monitoring and tracing possible affected persons and self-isolation processes.

The Residence Plan is being implemented as previously communicated to students by Professor Pamela Dube.

In the interim, the University has not shut down. Special measures have been taken to ensure that essential services continue on campus. Units are making use of skeleton staff, shifts, flexi-hours and some are able to work from home. This will ensure the continuation of the University’s operations.

Line managers should give direction to their staff in terms of their business continuity plans (BCPs), particularly concerning flexible work arrangements.

As communicated previously, we are taking all necessary precautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

We will communicate, later this weekend, once we are apprised of the status of affected persons and the extent of self-isolation.

We ask everyone to remain calm as we grapple with a very trying time. We also ask that no hoax messages be sent of possible infected persons, as this may cause hysteria.

I thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Professor Vivienne Lawack
Acting Rector and Vice-Chancellor
