VICE-RECTOR: RESEARCH & INNOVATION (5-Year Contract)


The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a vibrant, diverse and dynamic university and cognisant of its local, national and international environment, actively responds in critical and creative ways to the developmental needs of the country, within an ever-changing and challenging global context.

The academic enterprise constitutes the core mandate of a university; hence the quality of its

teaching, research and innovation endeavours is integral to its success. UWC recognises the

complexity of the academic project and wishes to build on its history of providing students with an

excellent academic experience. To enhance the University's growing research standing and its ability

to contribute to the country's innovation capacity, the Vice-Rector: Research and Innovation

focuses specifically on these important areas.

The Vice-Rector: Research and Innovation reports to the Rector and Vice-Chancellor and shares in

the responsibility of driving the institution's strategic direction through respective areas of

accountability.

The Vice-Rector: Research and Innovation is responsible for leading the University's research and

innovation portfolio, in collaboration with various partners and external stakeholders. The role

could, amongst others, include: postgraduate studies, community engagement, technology

transfer, research policy and implementation, library information services.

This portfolio calls for an individual with an excellent and established research track record,

experience in leading dynamic research environments, strategic leadership acumen, knowledge of

global trends and skills in setting up and developing innovation enterprises.

In addition, the University is looking for an individual who: 

 Has a doctorate and a wellestablished research profile and standing 

 Will foster and support cross-institutional collaboration and research 

 Will support and initiate activities furthering research and innovation development

 Will encourage and promote the generation of external income through research and innovation activities 

 Will support well-established as well as​​ emerging research areas to further enhance and expand             the University's fast -growing research and innovation agenda.

The expected starting date for the position would be January 2017 or soonest thereafter.

Short-listed candidates will be required to make a presentation and to participate in an interview.

nominee, proposer and seconder. It must be supported by: (a) a detailed curriculum vitae of the

nominee; (b) a memorandum on the nominee's suitability, prepared by the proposer and seconder;

and (c) a clear indication of the capacity in which the proposer and seconder are forwarding the

nomination.
