 Caroline Smart is a lecturer in the Criminal Justice & Procedure Department at the University of the Western Cape, with an LLB and LLM (International Criminal Justice). She lectures Criminal Law in the LLB and an elective on Advanced Criminal Law. She also lectures Criminal Law in the Certificate in Forensics Examinations. Her research focuses on substantive criminal law, criminology and economic crimes.

She is a graduate of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). After she completed her LLB, she was UWC’s first recipient of the South African German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice (TRANSCRIM) DAAD scholarship and was awarded a LLM in Transnational Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention – an International and African Perspective. She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and competed her articles at Herold Gie Attorneys in Cape Town. While at Herold Gie Attorneys, she tutored Criminal Law at UNISA.

Caroline joined the UWC Law Faculty in 2013. She is currently completing a PhD that focuses on criminal law defences and battered woman’s syndrome.   

She also holds a Diploma in Nursing (general, community health, psychiatry, midwifery) & Palliative Care. Prior completing her LLB, she worked as a Registered Nurse for approximately 15 years.
