 Prof Julie Phillips is the postgraduate coordinator of the Department of Physiotherapy. She obtained her PhD degree in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape in 2006. She was partially funded by the Flemish Inter-university Council in Belgium. 
She joined the University of the Western Cape in February 2000.  Professor Phillips is presently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences.  Her research focuses on strategies to curb the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases in Africa; the use of sport as a development tool to decrease risk behaviours among youth and the incidence of injuries in sport. She has collaborated with researchers in Europe (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany), United States, Brazil and parts of Africa in these areas. In addition she has presented her research findings at prestigious academic conferences in Europe, US, Australia, UK and Africa. She has published extensively in accredited scientific journals in Africa and Europe and has contributed chapters to books. She acts as a scientific reviewer for several scientific journals.
She has a strong track record as postgraduate supervisor. She has successfully supervised a large number of Masters and PhD students in South Africa and 2 Masters students in Belgium. She is currently supervising an additional 7 PhD candidates and 11 Masters students. She has acted as external examiner at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for several universities.
