Gail D Hughes, MPH, DrPH

Professor Gail Hughes is Director of South African Herbal Science and Medicine Institute, and joined the University of Western Cape in July 2010 in the Faculty of Natural Sciences.  She is an epidemiologist with more than 25+ years as public health researcher, and received her training from University of California, Berkeley.  In addition, she has an adjunct faculty appointment at University of Missouri-Columbia in School of Health Professions.
Prof. Hughes has served in academic appointments at various Universities (East Carolina University; Jackson State University, including a medical center and has trained and supervised postgraduate students, in addition to health professionals.
She has worked in diverse organizations—Government—State, City and County; non-governmental organizations(NGO’s); served as consultant for international agencies, and in senior management for several pharmaceutical/biotech companies. Her current research portfolio includes: investigation of phytomedicines for non-communicable disease/conditions—drug herb interaction and adverse events; co-use and adherence of both conventional medicine (ie ART) and traditional herbal medicines; clinical trial safety and efficacy of phytomedicines. Currently she is an investigator in the multi country PURE (Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiological) study and PI on an ancillary study investigating use of traditional herbal medicines for non- communicable diseases in South Africa.

Professor Hughes is South African National Research Foundation (NRF) rated scientist; has been awarded National Research Foundation, USAID, CDC, AHRQ, and numerous NIH grants. She has published in high impact, peer reviewed journals; written book chapters, technical reports, protocols and white papers. She serves on numerous international committees; member of American Public Health Association-Alternative and Complementary Medicine Health committee; executive member of Public Health Association of South Africa; and was twice awarded the South Africa Medical Research Council Distinguished Scientist.
