 Prof Africa is an elections expert and an experienced public commentator. Numerous media outlets regularly call on her to share her expert insights and opinion on a variety of subjects including South African elections and electoral politics. She has served as an election analyst for both the SABC and ENCA and has played an important role in election observation in South Africa. Prof Africa has extensive experience in applied research and research design having been involved in the design and execution of numerous research projects. Prof Africa specializes in teaching research methodology and design with a particular emphasis on public opinion and survey research.

Her research focuses on voting behaviour, elections, election campaigns, political communication and the relations between political parties and the media in South Africa. She has a particular interest in the electoral dynamics of the Western Cape. She has used her research focus to not only contribute substantively to the national debate on the challenges around elections, election campaigns and democracy in South Africa, but also to enhance the profile of UWC “as a significant research and innovation university, regionally and internationally engaged and connected to the public sphere”.

Prof Africa worked at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa) for eight years (1995-2003). Since joining UWC in 2010, Prof Africa has occupied various leadership roles within the Political Studies department as well as the Economic and Management Sciences faculty. These roles include being Deputy Dean of Teaching and Learning from January 2015 until December 2017 and departmental chair of the Political Studies department.
