 Prof Shaheed Hartley is Director of the Science Learning Centre for Africa at the University of the Western Cape (UWC-SLCA) in South Africa. He completed the following qualifications in South Africa namely BSc, BSc Hons, HDE, BEd Hons, MPhil. He completed his doctorate in science education at Curtin University in Perth, Australia in 2002 under the supervision of Prof David Treagust, an eminent researcher in science education. Prof Hartley taught science and mathematics at high school for 12 years before moving to Stellenbosch University where he became involved in research management. He later joined the Cape Peninsula University of Technology where he started out as Director of Research and later became the acting Dean of Research. He moved to the University of the Western Cape to establish the UWC Science Learning Centre for Africa training masters and doctoral students in science education and also conducting various outreach projects to support teachers and learners in science. Prof Hartley publishes in the area of science education and won numerous national and international awards for his work in science education. In 2009 Prof Hartley won the prestigious NSTF award as the South African Science Communicator for Public Awareness for his contribution to science, mathematics and technology education evaluated over a five-year period. In 2017 Prof Hartley was awarded the UWC Chancellor’s Award. This award, the highest by the University, was made to Prof Hartley on 28 November 2017 by UWC Chancellor, Bishop Dr Thabo Makgoba. The award is made in recognition of exemplary service and to a person who has made a significant contribution to higher education in our communities and towards nation building in general. Also in November 2017 Prof Hartley was awarded the DVC: Academic Special Award for Excellence in Learning & Teaching & Scholarly Engagement.
