Biography

 Dr. Sivakumar Sivasubramaniam is currently Extraordinary Professor and Immediate past Head of the Department of Language Education, Faculty of Education, at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He is also a National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher. His epistemic stance articulates the centrality, immediacy and primacy of constructivist ethos in language teacher education. In light of this, ecological/experiential and open dialogue approaches that are consistent with social justice, sociocultural and equity perspectives assume a particular relevance and prominence in his scholarly repertoire.

He holds an MA in English Literature from the University of Madras, India, as well as an MA in (Linguistics) TESOL from the University of Surrey, UK, and a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Nottingham, U.K.

Dr. Sivasubramaniam has been a foreign language/second language educator for thirty five plus years, and has taught English in India, Ethiopia, Thailand, Bahrain, Armenia and U.A.E. prior to relocating to the Western Cape in 2011.

His research interests include response-centred reading/writing pedagogies, literature-based language pedagogies, constructivism in EIL, second language advocacy, narratives in language education and text-based approaches to academic and social literacy practices. His epistemic stance is directed at formulating and fostering narratives of voice, agency and inter subjectivity that are crucial to research into language teacher and literacy education. He has supervised a number of Masters and PhD students in addition to co-authoring scholarly publications with them.

Dr. Sivasubramaniam has received outstanding student evaluations throughout his teaching career, especially for his human-centred approach to learning and his sensitivty to students' voice and agency. He received the St. Bernard's Special Merit Award for Excellence in Teaching and Community Service, from Assumption University, Bangkok, Thailand (where he is featured in the Assumption University Hall of Fame).

 Since 2010, Dr. Sivakumar Sivasubramaniam has been serving as Chief Editor of the Journal of English as an International Language, a Scopus indexed journal (http://www.eilj.com), where he screens, coordinates editorial reviews and submissions from across the world and writes a foreword for each issue of the journal.  

In addition, he has served on the Editorial Board of Asian EFL Journal (http://asian-efl-journal.com/) as Associate Editor on this prestigious Scopus indexed journal from August 2007 till January 2019. He is also an Executive Committee Member of the English Scholars Beyond Borders (ESBB), a body composed of leading academics in ELT/TESOL from across the globe, who promote a heterogeneous global English Speech Community.
