 Prof  Stanley Ridge (D. Litt, British Columbia) is an Emeritus Professor in the English Department, and a former Chairperson, Dean of Arts and Vice Rector. He was Chair of the Council of the National English Literary Museum in Grahamstown, a member of the National Heritage Council, and a member of the National Language Body for English. He is also the academic trustee of the Babette Taute Trust, which awards scholarships to students of English and supports the National English Literary Museum. In 2004 he was awarded the English Academy Gold Medal for "sustained, distinguished service to English".

Prof. Ridge has expertise in Higher Education and Language Policy and Planning; Renaissance Literature; 19th Century American Literature; Religion and Literature; South African Literary and Publishing History Across Language Lines; Discourse Analysis; Sociolinguistics; Translation Studies.
