The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) is a unit within the portfolio of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and its key responsibility is to coordinate, facilitate and promote the development of community engagement activities at this higher education institution. Given this university’s rich history of involvement in community development, the Community Engagement Unit identified a strategic objective for 2011 - 2012 to develop a database of community engagement activities on campus. The purpose of this database is to publicize community engagement at UWC and use the information as a basis for developing promotional material and items about the institutions’ history of involvement in community development.
The creation and management of a database involves a formal research activity around the community engagement information that is available at UWC and the initial indexing of available data by 'tagging' the individually stored information based on common factors or lack thereof. The E-learning Development and Support Unit (EDSU) will play an important role in the upload of the information onto an online platform.
