International partnerships are a way forward for higher education institutions to develop niche areas through service-learning. It can facilitate the development and maintenance of the competitive edge which higher education institutions need to attract good students, funding and maintaining quality teaching and research through community engagement. Developing international partnerships allows the combination of strengths and skills that will enable communities to function even more successfully. The TWK-UWC partnership provides a unique case study that can provide useful information and knowledge to other prospective partnerships. This partnership also facilitates the discovery that the joint effort between Higher Education Institutions, community and the public service sector creates new opportunities and new prosperity in the cities and towns of Caledon, Genadendal and Grabouw.
The TWK-HAN-UWC Partnership receives students from the HAN University who are registered with UWC and who are involved in service-learning opportunities in the communities of Grabouw and Genadendal. The partnership is based on the internationalization at home experience which involves the facilitation of opportunities for UWC students and HAN students to engage in planned and unplanned inter-professional experiences so that there is a sharing of knowledge of different contexts.
