The webinar will feature:

  • Mercia Andrews, director of the Trust for Community Outreach and Education and member of Inyanda Land Movement
  • Themba Chauke, secretary of the Landless People’s Movement and Slow Food Movement, and
  • Bandile Mdlalose, president of the Community Justice Movement.

Chair: Boaventura Monjane, postdoctoral candidate at PLAAS. Dr Monjane wrote his PhD on agrarian social movements in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and will moderate the conversation.

Land struggles persist across South Africa, in and around the cities, informal settlements, on commercial farms, among small-scale farmers, in the communal areas, and in mining-affected communities. Yet, social movements and activists organising around land demands in South Africa have generally organised separately, in these spaces, following the legacy of colonialism and apartheid. Treating land struggles in a segmented way, namely ‘farmer workers’, ‘small-scale farmers’, ‘the landless’ and ‘urban dwellers’, and this may hinder urban-rural connections.

Questions for discussion include:

  • Can alliances be built and forged across rural and urban divides?
  • What have we learnt from past attempts to do so?
  • What is the potential now for a cross-sectoral national-wide land movement?

Tune in on Thursday, 3 September 2020 at:
