Population Census provides vital information on the population dynamics and count, over and above that it informs government planning and decision making on service delivery and resource allocation. Census is a costly exercise which requires careful planning. Part of the preparation process includes undertaking a number of tests on data collection methods and tools to inform the main census.

Globally, the 2020 round of Censuses is envisaged to be largely driven by technology. South Africa is among those countries that have planned to use digital collection methods in the upcoming Census 2021. It is paramount to take advantage of technological advancements which have the potential to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
