In honouring the life and the spirit of Nelson Mandela, The DVC Research and Innovation and the Office for International Relations are hosting a monthly webinar series to reflect on the role and contribution of universities in promoting Global Citizenship and a more inclusive society.

This month we are showcasing the response of UWC researchers in addressing a range of issues with a webinar on:

Global Citizenship Webinar 3: Responds to the COVID-19 pandemic

Presenters will be sharing their research contribution related to the current pandemic with their views informed by their personal and professional experiences.

  1. Prof Rouaan Maarman, Deputy Dean: Research, Faculty of Education, UWC, will be speaking about Unmasking the state of basic education during the pandemic.
  2. Prof. Mmaki Jantjies, Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Economic Management Sciences, UWC, will be speaking about Rethinking the role of technology in schools post COVID-19.
  3. Ms. Janelle Mangwanda, Researcher, Faculty of Law, UWC, will be speaking about The impact of COVID-19 on the criminal justice system in SA and beyond.
  4. Dr Erica Munnik, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Community Health Sciences, will be speaking about Human decision-making during the COVID-19 era.
  5. Dr Raquel London, Department of Experimental Psychology, Ghent University, will be speaking about Psychology in the lab and decision-making in real life.

Global Citizenship Webinars - Past & Yet To Come

The first Global Citizenship, in July 2020, saw Prof Saths Cooper reflecting on the life, activism and principles of Nelson Mandela from the prison to presidency and beyond. Prof Cooper shared his reflections on Nelson Mandela and on how higher education can respond to advance global citizenship and an equitable society.

In the second session, in August 2020, Prof Josè Frantz, Prof Vuyokazi Nomlomo, Prof Ruth Hall, Ms Yasmin Forbes and Dr Mary Hames reflected on the role of Higher Education in combating gender discrimination. The session was facilitated by Prof Michelle Andipatin.

The subsequent sessions in this series will focus on:
Session 4: Are universities effective in global citizenship education? (October)
Session 5: Using global citizenship to achieve SDG and NDP goals (November)
