Our PhD programme is by dissertation. The General Rules with regard to admission, curriculum and examination for doctoral degrees apply. Entry to the doctoral programme in the Department of Library & Information Science requires:

  • A good MLIS or MBibl degree with an average of 65% across the programme  and a minimum of 65% for the Masters dissertation
  • If a structured Masters degree then it should include a research dissertation counting for 50% of the total credits
  • Evidence of good English writing competence.

The PhD degree is a 3-year programme for full time study and 4 years for part-time study . Prospective candidates are required to submit a written initial study proposal to the postgraduate coordinator, Dr Lizette King. Deadline for application is 15 September each year, and students who require study visas are advised to apply before 30 August.
