2019 2ND ACADEMIC SEMINAR PRESENTED BY DR CHAWINGA AND DR DZANDZA: 27 AUGUST, 2019

At the last August 2019 graduation ceremony, the Department of Library and Information Science graduated two PhDs: Dr. Winner Chawinga and Dr Patience Dzandza. They both presented at the 2019 2nd Academic Seminar organized by the Department, with Dr Chawinga presenting on “Research data management in Malawi”; and Dr Dzandza on the “Use and management of information systems in academic libraries in Ghana”. Dr Chawinga is a Senior Lecturer at Mzuzu University, Malawi and Dr Dzandza an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Ghana.

SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION GUIDANCE PRESENTATION BY DR ESTHER WHITE: 04 APRIL 2019​

Dr Esther White recently completed her PhD in Library and Information Science at the University of the Western Cape. Dr White presented on Scholarly communication guidance for doctoral students and proposed a model as well as a scholarly communication guidance plan for doctoral studies. Dr White is an Assistant Librarian at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana..

PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP, 24 - 28 JULY 2017

The Department of Library and Information Science and the National Library of South Africa hosted a 5 day workshop which was designed to introduce library practitioners to concepts of preservation of collections under their care. ​

​LIBRARIES IN THE DIGITAL AGE: COPYRIGHT AND RELATED ISSUES

On 6 June 2017, Prof. Tom Lipinsky delivered a public lecture on recent international developments in copyright law. The lecture was hosted by UWC's Department of Library and Information Science and the UWC Library. This year's lecture is an update to a previous talk at UWC in June 2016 in which Prof. Lipinski spoke about emerging trends in copyright reform globally, including issues of licensed content delivery for libraries, net neutrality, the right to be forgotten, and patron privacy. Prof. Lipinski is the Dean of the School of Information Studies, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has a legal background and has written numerous articles, book chapters and books. He is a visiting lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University of Leuven) in Belgium where he lectures on IT and Intellectual Property Law; he has been a visiting professor at the University of Pretoria, School of Information Technology and at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is active in copyright education and policy-making, chairing the ACRL Copyright Discussion Group, Co-Chair of the ALA OITP Committee on Legislation Copyright Subcommittee, a member of the Copyright and Other Legal Matters Committee of IFLA and serves as an IFLA delegate to the World Intellectual Property Organization's Standing Committee on Copyright and Other Rights.
