 CENTALS: School of Nursing

The School of Nursing at the University of the Western Cape forms part of the Community and Health Science faculty. The School offers education and training in both under and post graduate levels. All programs offered by the School are recognized by the South African Nursing Council for registration, and are also registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accredited by CHE. The School of Nursing at the University of the Western Cape forms is located in the Community and Health Science faculty. It is the largest residential nursing school in the country and offers the B.Cur as its core undergraduate program and four masters qualifications and PhD.

Prof. Thembisile Khanyile is the Director of the School.  Inside SoN, she is supported by a management committee consisting of four Portfolio heads (for under and post graduate programs and clinical learning). In addition, there are coordinators for each year level of the B.cur and post graduate disciplines.

The School is currently involved in various projects, each headed by SoN Program coordinators with PhD. Its resent success secured enough funding to sustain a research and scholarship centre over the period of four years.

CENTALS project outline
The project will establish a centre for teaching and learning scholarship – School of Nursing Centre for Teaching and Learning Scholarship – to increase research capacity and provide academic support for postgraduate students, thereby significantly increasing postgraduate output to 16 – 20 masters candidates and at least two doctoral students within four years. The centre will also review the current model of nursing education delivery and share best practices nationally and internationally or propose alternative models for sustainable, evidence-based nursing education and quality-centered expanded enrolments. The Centre aims to increase research activities at the School by at least 6 – 8 independent projects on teaching and learning, with an increased publication record of 40 articles by the end of the period.
“The School has learned many lessons which it is ready to share nationally and internationally and we believe it can act as a model for other under-resourced departments to successfully address provincial and national needs in nursing. We hope to position the School as a centre of excellence in teaching and scholarship in the country and Africa.”
