HIV & AIDS Research Center:
HIV and AIDS continue to ravage Africa, particularly Southern Africa. In South Africa, all facets of society are affected - and are responding. In 2009, there were over 200 discrete HIV-related research activities underway at the University of the Western Cape, in nearly all faculties and departments. This multi-disciplinary and multi-level response is crucial, but needs to be harnessed and situated in social and systems context.
The UWC Centre for Research in HIV and AIDS was created to help meet this need for both scaling up and joining up efforts. UWC's research is often located at the coalface of service delivery and policy development, in close collaboration with communities. The Centre aims to catalyze and coordinate research and its use, emphasizing key areas that are still relatively neglected: health systems, education and learning systems, societal responses to gender based violence, and capacity strengthening at community, organizational, and systems levels. It is a growing virtual centre, currently anchored in two large grants and other projects based at the School of Public Health.
The Centre was approved by UWC Council in November 2009 and formally launched during the HIV in Context Research Symposium in late March, 2010.
