 Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health


The PGD in Public Health aims to provide graduates with an overview of Public Health, with an emphasis on health sector transformation, district health services, and Primary Health Care: Prioritise health needs at population level; Design, implement and evaluate Public Health programmes.

The PGD is especially aimed at health and welfare managers, supervisors, educators who want general Public Health knowledge and skills to transform their sector without necessarily having to do formal research; and/or practitioners trained in other disciplines, but now working in Public Health. This one or two year programme is appropriate for practitioners at local, district, provincial and national levels. It is also a potential progression towards the MPH.

Curriculum: The curriculum comprises dynamically interacting themes divided into six compulsory modules; these relate to critical competence areas in the practice of public health.

Admission requirements: A three year Bachelors degree or equivalent in any relevant discipline, e.g. health sciences, social work, and education;  and a minimum of three years working experience in the health or welfare sector.


The application process consists of 3 main parts:

1.    Online application

2.    SOPH Student Data Form: This form asks you for additional details for your SOPH Postgraduate Programme application, in addition to your online application

3.    Application Task: The application task consists of two parts, a motivation and a writing task.

Once you have made the online application, the SOPH Student Data Form and the Application Task will be emailed to you. Please make sure your correct email address is included in your online application.
