The Faculty of Education at UWC has a long
history of innovative research in education, particularly in relation to
the offering of research-based programmes in teacher. As part of its
plans for the next five years, it has identified particular research
niche areas that it will be concentrating on. These areas straddle the
full spectrum of education from school education to vocational education
to adulteducation and to higher education. In addition, the focus ison
key subjects such as Languages, Mathematics, Science and Technology
which have posed problems at the school level, as is evidenced by the
poor performance of our pupils in national and international tests.
Through these niche areas the Faculty hopes to contribute to new
knowledge in addressing the problems in education.
Niche Area 1
Language as educational, social and contextual practice
Team leader: Prof Sivasubramaniam
This research addresses a socially-aligned
epistemology predicated on Ecological/ Socio-cultural and Open Dialogue
approaches to language education. It is oriented toward formulating,
fostering and sustaining epistemological stances that would encourage
the accrual of human voice and agency in the language process as
researchers grapple with a multi-lingual mandate in a contextual setting
with English as a means to social empowerment.
Niche Area 2
Systemic approaches to development in diverse education contexts
Leader: Prof O Bojuwoye
Research pursued in this niche is underpinned
by Systems Theory. The relationships between various elements of the
education system are studied from a holistic rather than elemental
perspective in order to better understand them and to make sound
recommendations for the improvement of schooling.
Niche Area 3
Science and Mathematics Education
Niche Area Leader: Prof M Ogunniyi
This research addresses issues surrounding
the teaching and learning of Science, Mathematics and Technology. The
five research projects include a focus on Science and Indigenous
Knowledge Systems, Argumentative Teaching in Science, the Relevance of
School Mathematics Educations, Language, Technology and Mathematics
Teaching and Learning, and the evaluation of outreach Science and
Mathematics Education projects.
Niche Area 4
Team Leader: Dr J Papier
Post-school studies concern the intersections between vocational education higher education and adult education.
