 Department of Public Administration

Public Administration serves to address the needs of the public sector and the particular challenges South Africa faces in this sector, and therefore aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to manage the public sector professionally in a non-racial democratic South Africa.  Depending on the options for specialisation for degree purposes, students can also pursue careers in the private sector.

The mission of the School of Government's Undergraduate Programme in Public Administration is to achieve academic excellence, which will enable it to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are required to qualitatively manage and administer the South African public sector.

Specific objectives include providing a curriculum that is appropriate to its Southern African context, that conceptualizes the field of public administration and management, and which attends to the education and training requirements of present and potential students; course material which is development oriented to serve the developing needs of South Africa; developing students' understanding of emerging public issues and the significance of public administration in this regard. Public administration is a major shaper of public policy and public values, and therefore significant emphasis is placed on the study of public administration and management from a policy perspective.
