The research focus of the Department is aimed not only at contributing to the wider knowledge and critical analysis of current legal issues through publications, but also through supervising excellent LLM and LLD theses and research papers  as well as making sure that our course content, both on under-graduate and post-graduate level, remains topical and research based. In line with this vision, the Department has recently introduced a number of new LLB and LLM Modules, such as the new LLM Module on Extension of Social Protection and we re-aligned our traditional module on Negotiable Instruments in line with current developments in electronic payments and banking.

Recent publications within the Department focus on aspects of Tax Law, Labour Law, Social Security and Disability, Competition Law and aspects of International Trade and Regional Integration and Harmonisation. The flagship publication of the year was a co-edited book: Labour Law into the Future: Essays in honour of Darcy du Toit. Ongoing research within the Department includes doctoral theses on Corporate Governance, International Trade in Natural Resources, Labour Law and Competition Law.
