All members of the Department of Private Law regularly make presentations at conferences both nationally and internationally in their respective subject areas, namely the Law of Persons, Family Law, Customary Law, the Law of Succession, the Law of Delict, Contract Law, the Law of Things, Trust Law, Muslim Personal Law, Unjustified Enrichment, Intellectual Property and the Conflict of Laws, as well as on legal education.  A theme of many pieces of scholarship emanating from the Department is the infusion of Private Law with the values of the Constitution.  Members of Department consistently publish in peer reviewed as well as other journals, with the tally of peer reviewed articles steadily increasing. The Department has three NRF rated researchers, all of them having published books in their fields, some of them into their second editions. One of the NRF rated researchers is an internationally recognised scholar, while the other two are on a trajectory towards that status. Numerous members of the Department have been invited to Universities in other countries as visiting scholars, and presented lectures there. Members of the Department are currently supervising a number of masters and doctoral students.
