Agricultural Research Council: Range and Forage Institute

The ARC-Range and Forage Institute at UWC promotes the sustainable utilisation of our veld and pasture resources while improving natural resource based livelihoods among the rural communities of the arid parts of South Africa.

UWC Nature Reserve

The UWC Nature Reserve is a unit within BCB responsible for the Cape Flats Nature Reserve, the Indigenous Nursery and the Environmental Education Center.

Restoration Ecology

  • EU funded Management and policy options for the sustainable development of arid areas in southern Africa project (MAPOSDA). Partner countries include Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa, Wales, Spain and Norway. South Partner institutions include PLAAS at UWC and the Lesley Hill Institute of Plant Conservation at UCT.
  • GEF funded Desert Margins Programme. South African Partners are North West University and Environmental Monitoring Group (EMG). Nine African countries take part in this project.

South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) - Biodiversity Information Management (BIM)

As per an MOU between UWC and SANBI, biodiversity data is stored and Internet-disseminated from BCB.  Secondly The MOU provides cooperation to build a research hub around applied needs and use of biodiversity data. The MOU was signed in the presence of Derek Hanekom, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology at BCB in March 2012 with an emphasis to address research needs and provide training in scare skills.
