UWC ranked top science university in Africa

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has been ranked as the best African institution in the 2016 Nature Index.

Nature, a top science journal, has recognised the university for its growing research contributions to the sciences.

For the 2016 Nature Index (covering the period 1 June 2015 to 31 May 2016) UWC is ranked number 1 in Physical Science – not just in South Africa, but for Africa as a whole.

UWC research Professor Roy Maartens affirms that the university has fast become one of the country’s top research and academic institutions.

This is largely due to recent science developments such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project (a collaborative astronomy installation) will help advance research efforts on the continent.

It will be the world’s biggest astronomy experiment. This is a wonderful thing for African science. UWC has been involved in this project and have become increasingly strong in astrophysics.

Prof Maartens explains that the apartheid regime deliberately created UWC to be an inferior university, but instead the institution is breaking ground in the fields of science research and IT.

The apartheid plan to turn UWC into an inferior university has failed. UWC has turned the tables to become an increasingly successful university.

Prof Maartens says that the university is invested in raising up a new generation of scientists, pioneers and thought leaders in South Africa.
