The UWCDU Executive Organising Committee – Who we are

Tournament Convener – Bongiwe Mabena

Bongiwe is a final year law student who specialises in gender law, intellectual property, child justice and competition law. The charismatic young woman has represented the University of the Western Cape at the 2015 South African Universities Debating Championships as a speaker. Bongiwe’s versatility saw her also adjudicating in a number of tournaments including the 2014 PANS which was held in Limpopo, chief adjudicator at the 2015 Western Cape Provincials and adjudicated at the 2015 UCT open. Bongiwe is now the current ChairLady of UWC 

Debating Union. Administrator – Alyce Mpahlela

Alyce is a 2nd year Bcom financial accounting student who has been a volunteer at the gender equity unit for 2 years. Having been part of the academic excellence program in her faculty Alyce has also held a number of economics workshops at the UWC debating union. Alyce joined the UWC Debating Union in 2014 and in one year was already a force to be reckoned with. As a first time adjudicator she broke in the top ten adjudicators at the South African Universities Debating Championships. Alyce is now the current Secretary General of the UWC Debating Union.

Chief Adjudicators – Patricia Johnson-Castle & Fanele Mashwama 

Patricia Johnson-Castle Patricia is the Winner of the UCT Fall Internal League final, 10th place speaker and semifinalist at the Women’s Debating Open 2015, 10th place speaker and quarter finalist at South African Universities Debating Championships 2015, 7th place speaker and semifinalist at UCT 150th Open, 2014 Finalist at Cambridge Women’s Open, top speaker and semifinalist at the 2014 Huber Debates and Quarter finalist at the 2014 Hart House Invitational. Deputy- chief adjudicator at 2016 USDV Western Cape Novice Tournament, Independent adjudicator at United States Universities Debating Championships 2015 (as well as 2014), breaking judge at CUSID/APDA North American Debating Championship 2015 (as well as 2014 and 2013), independent adjudicator at the 2015 World Universities Debating Championships Deputychief adjudicator North American Universities Debating Championships 2014 Breaking judge at Yale Intervarsity 2014. Fanele Mashwama One of the most decorated adjudicators on the panel. Having won several tournaments including the US National Debate Championships (APDA) and World Universities Debating Championships Fanele has made a name for himself both locally and internationally. Fanele was the DCA of the United States British Parliament Championships and has been a Chief Adjudicator at a number of smaller regional tournaments. It gives us great pleasure to have one of the world’s greatest debaters in this tournament. 

Finance – Simamkele Gcora 

Simamkele is currently doing his final year of commerce in Finance degree. He is the treasurer of the UWCDU. He is passionate about the security and general wellbeing of the LGBTIAQ community. Simamkele joined the Gender Equity Unit in the first year and has been an active member since then. Last year saw Simamkele graduating from the emerging leaders program. 

Events Co-ordinators – Thando Gwatyu & Ambesa Mlindi Thando Gwatyu 

Thando is a first year politics student who has over 4 years of debating experienced. In his high school years he represented the Western Cape Debating Board twice at the South Africans Schools Debating Championships. Thando is now the current schools officer in the UWC Debating Union Committee and is responsible for workshops done weekly to high schools. Mainly LEAP science and maths high school and Sea Point High School. 

Ambesa Mlindi Ambesa is also a first year politics student who has over 5 years of debating experience. In his high school years Ambesa represented the Western Cape for about 3 years at the South African Debating Championships. Ambesa also subsequently made it to the South African academy team towards the end of his debating career. He is now the co schools officer in the UWC Debating Union Committee and assists in running the weekly debating workshops to the various high schools
