33rd Science learning centre 2016

UWC’s Science Learning Centre for Africa, partnered with the Garden Cities Archway Foundation, has opened its 33rd school science lab, giving learners some practical experience of the subject.

UWC hands over its first three school science centres for the year

“As the University of the Western Cape we have decided to become part of the solution to the problem of Maths and Science education our country is facing.”

Those were the words of UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, at the official handing over of several science learning centres, equipped with state-of –the –art facilities on 2 February 2016.

The day marked exactly 33 science learning centres handed over to schools in the Western Cape - this initiative made possible by the UWC Science Learning Centre for Africa, and the Garden Cities Archway Foundation is UWC’s way of encouraging learners to explore careers in Maths and Science.

Schools who benefited this time around were Porterville Primary in Porterville, Bernadino Heights High in Kraaifontein, and Sophumelela High in Samora Machel.

Professor Shaheed Hartley, Director at the Science Learning Centre for Africa, said by opening these science learning centres they want to stimulate interest in science and make sure learners understand that science is all around them.

“We sincerely hope that these centres will be utilised to their maximum. We want science clubs to be established and for every learner to get an opportunity to utilise this space,” he concluded.

John Mathews, CEO at the Garden Cities Archway Foundation, said all the schools had earned the labs, “These labs were not just handed to them, it is also the teacher’s attitudes that we assess. We want to see that they are passionate about learning and most importantly science learning,” he noted.

Professor Pretorius  who has been to 11 schools with the SLCA team , said he had discovered the impact the University of the Western Cape has in communities, as all the Principals from the schools involved  had studied at UWC.

“Social circumstances have made us believe that we are chickens, but we are eagles, and like eagles we were born to fly.” Prof Pretorius told students Education- and, Science and Maths in particular- are tools to unlock the future, the way to achieve and escape.”
