Ashley Daswa inspires UWC students on his journey to Fordham University in New York

PhD candidate Ashley Khumbudzo Daswa makes the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and the entire University of the Western Cape (UWC) proud with his achievements.

Daswa has been accepted into the International Political Economy and Development (IPED) Advanced Certificate Programme in Emerging Markets and Country Risk Analysis at Fordham University in New York, USA, based on his academic merit.

This is the only New York State recognised summer certificate programme of its kind. Daswa’s learning journey is sponsored by the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professional (ABSIP) and Sanlam Investments, where he held the position as a Research Analyst.

UWC Registrar Nita Lawton-Misra believes Ashley’s success is a credit to his own efforts, as well as to the hard work of the faculty. “Well done on this wonderful achievement and for flying the UWC flag high.”

Daswa started to display his leadership qualities early in his career at UWC, being elected as class representative for many undergraduate and postgraduate modules. He recently graduated with a Masters in Commerce (cum laude) from UWC’s School of Business and Finance, with his research focusing on Finance and Investments.

“UWC has always been my second home, and the leaders at the School of Business and Finance have played a huge role in my success,” Daswa notes. “These are people who empower young graduates to excel in academia and in the corporate world.”

He will complete two courses in June and July - Strategic Financial Management and International Business & Governments - before completing Economics of Emerging Markets at the University of Pretoria when he returns to South Africa later this year.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for him - due to a lack of qualified Maths teachers at his high school, he entered UWC with Maths Literacy, which wasn’t ideal for the intensive calculations he would soon be performing. But this did not stand in his way to greatness - dedication and perseverance kept him going, along with a thirst for knowledge and a hunger to master challenges that drove him to success at UWC.

“I am also motivated by being an example or source of inspiration to many others,” he says - especially since he found so many sources of inspiration during his own studies.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to Prof Andy Hsieh and Prof Hodnett for their support, Mrs Ramona Francis for walking the journey with me, and lastly my family for all their support,” he says. “And without Jesus Christ, my knowledge and understanding would not be possible.”
