Academics, attorneys and representatives of financial institutions from around the country attended the Succession and Trust Law Conference at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

The conference, which took place on 18 October, brought together academic and fiduciary experts who specialise in deceased estates, succession law as well as trust law.

Professor Francois du Toit from UWC’s Private Law Department said, “It is a good opportunity to share ideas and discuss recent developments in succession and trust law.

“It is also an important opportunity for emerging researchers to read papers in a relaxed academic atmosphere.”

The topics discussed reflected a number of important issues in contemporary succession and trust law. Among others, Dr Latiefa Manie from UWC highlighted the need to amend the Trust Property Control Act 57 of 1988, while Dr Eben Nel from PSG Wealth discussed aspects of cross-border family succession, beneficial ownership and trusts. Representing the University of Cape Town, Advocate Fatima Essop presented the topic: The Estate Planning Practices of Muslims in the Cape.

The Conference was financially supported by Juta, LexisNexis and PSG Wealth.
