The University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) rugby team started their Varsity Shield campaign on a high when they downed the University of Fort Hare  26-8 in an away match in Alice on Monday, 27 January.

The win powered FNB UWC to the summit of the log standings, placing them above defending champions, the Central University of Technology, who narrowly beat the University of KwaZulu-Natal 26-25 at home in another match on the evening. The victory has put the FNB UWC team in good stead to win the competition and earn a promotion to the elite Varsity Cup next year.

The game at the Davidson Rugby Stadium had a patchy start with UWC fly-half, Dale van Schalkwyk, putting the first kick-off of the match directly into touch. Thereafter, FNB UFH Blues scrum-half, Bangihlombe Kobese, was guilty of a knock on  from the resultant scrum. It was a trend that would ultimately persist for most of the match’s tricky conditions .

Once the nerves of both sides had settled, FNB UWC started dominating and made their early securing of possession count. UWC captain and man of the match, Freddie Muller, scored four penalties, while tries from Kenwin Wiener, James Verity-Amm and José Julies put the UWC side in command. Van Schalkwyk scored a conversion.

FNB UWC’s next game will be against the Tshwane University of Technology at the UWC Sports Stadium at 7pm on Monday, 3 February.
