Google visits UWC

Author: Institutional Advancement: (021) 959 2625

Google recently held a company showcase at the UWC Student Centre, giving students the opportunity to interact with staff at Google about life at Google - and possible career opportunities ranging from marketing and sales to I.T.

Google visits UWC

Google visited the University of the Western Cape recently to interact with UWC students and staff and inform them about the company, its products and careers. A South African web developer at Google, Jacques Brouwer, spoke to post-graduate UWC Computer Science students about moving overseas and starting a new career at Google. He also provided valuable tips about the application and interview process for internships, the internship itself and the advantages as well as the challenges thereof.

“Applying for internships at Google is easier than I thought: I learnt that there are people from South Africa working there and I think that my degree - which taught me how to think of new ways to solve problems using computers - will help me in an application for a job at Google.” said Conal Da Costa - a UWC BSc (Computer Science) Honours student.

Damien Hamilton-Wood, a technical recruiter at one of Google’s headquarters in Zurich, advised that UWC students who are interested in working at Google should research the roles that they would like to play at the company. “Google aims to provide tools to make information accessible and easy to use, I would thus encourage students who are interested in technology and who are passionate about making a difference in the world to apply for internships at Google.” he said.

Students who are interested in working at Google should visit their career page at www.google.com/careers/students for information on potential internship and job opportunities as well as the programmes available for students and the company culture.

Google’s visit was hosted by the UWC Careers Service – visit their website or like them on Facebook to find out about the many interesting career options and opportunities open to UWC students, and for some expert guidance for navigating the competitive world of work.
