UWC alumna and Springbok Women Captain Babalwa Latsha has been shortlisted as triple finalist for the prestigious 2020 Momentum Gsport Awards.

Latsha, who became the first women’s rugby 15 player in South Africa to sign a professional contract when she joined SD Eibar in Spain last year, was named in three categories when the final nominations were announced at the weekend. Her name appears in the Momentum Athlete of the Year, Woman of the Year and in the Global Woman in Sport categories.

Born in the Eastern Cape town of Mount Frere and raised in Khayelitsha, Latsha has been a household name since she shot to stardom following her successful academic and sporting careers at UWC. She graduated with an LLB degree last year and has been in hot form for the senior national women’s rugby team.

Latsha has extended her contract with Eibar for another season, and is more focussed on pursuing her sporting dream. But when she is not on the rugby field she often spends time inspiring young people through talks and training sessions in disadvantaged communities.

The UWC community is encouraged to get behind our own and vote for Babalwa Latsha: gsport.co.za/voting.
