The Dullah Omar Institute in the University of the Western Cape's Faculty of Law will present the 12th annual Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture on October 9, 2018.

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Naledi Pandor, will deliver the lecture entitled: "Entrenching a Human Rights Culture in South Africa - Problems, Prospects, Success".

"We're proud and feel honoured that we're able to host this lecture in honour of Dullah. We've been able to do so in close consultation with the Omar family because we think it's important that we do the lecture in a way that embraces the spirit and legacy of Dullah," said Professor Jaap de Visser, Director of the Dullah Omar Institute, who highlighted that some of Advocate Omar’s greatest attributes were his humility and passion for social justice.

Advocate Omar's sister and family representative, Ms Latifa Omar, said the lecture is a highlight for the family every year.

"It is important for us to keep the memory of Dullah alive to ensure that what he lived for and worked very hard for does not disappear... Through this memorial lecture, not only is his name being upheld but, more importantly, the principles and beliefs that he held dear are being annually refreshed, updated and made visible,” said Ms Omar.

“We have to express our congratulations to UWC and the Institute. The leadership of the Institute, with the support of the University, and the calibre of researchers and staff that have been attracted to the Institute - together with the output of their research - has been something to marvel at."
