Visiting Prof Issa Shivji brings new insights into politics of South Africa

There are four key questions that determine the character of any society. Where do people live? What do they produce? Where do they produce it? And who appropriates the surplus of the produce?

Prof Issa Shivji, Tanzanian author and academic, and one of Africa's leading experts on law and development issues, will be asking those questions over the next four four months, as he joins the University of the Western Cape (UWC) as a visiting professor.

Prof Shivji will be based at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS). He was formally welcomed by PLAAS Director, Prof Andries du Toit, at a welcoming ceremony organized in his honour  on 5 September 2017.

Prof Shivji was a distinguished professor in constitutional law in the University of Dar es Salaam's Faculty of Law for 36 years, has taught and worked in universities all over the world, written numerous articles and books, and has also produced a weekly column printed in national newspapers.

He is a well-known legal scholar and Africanist, and has devoted most of his life to addressing issues regarding the exploitation of Tanzanians through both national and international economic and legal policies and orders.

Prof Shivji is particularly known for his view that human rights alone cannot transform a country: “You cannot have a free individual in an enslaved society,” he has said.

The PLAAS staff are excited to work with Prof Shivji, and are looking forward to benefiting from his insights into the politics of South Africa.
