UWC congratulates Prof Isaacs on UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS) food security report launch

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) congratulates UWC Professor, Moenieba Isaacs, who played a key role in the drafting of Sustainable fisheries and aquaculture for food security and nutrition: A report by the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) on Food Security and Nutrition.

The report, commissioned by the UN Committee on World Food Security (CFS), was officially launched on Friday, 13 June 2014.

Considering that food insecurity is a massive challenge on a global scale, this report seeks to provide critical information to the international community pertaining to the frequently overlooked importance and contribution of fisheries and aquaculture in improving food security and nutrition for millions of poor around the world. Furthermore, the report highlights that fish – produced via fish farming or caught from the wild marine and freshwater – is a primary source of high quality protein and essential fatty acids and nutrients, which are vital in combating nutritional challenges worldwide, and especially in Africa.

The report is the most comprehensive of its kind on fisheries and aquaculture for understanding the complex relationship between fisheries, aquaculture and food and nutrition security, in addition to environmental, economic, social and governance issues.

The report consists of the following subsections:

• Importance of fish for food security and nutrition

• Towards sustainable fisheries and aquaculture for better food security and nutrition

• Governance of fisheries and aquaculture for food security and nutrition

• Conclusions and recommendations

Prof Sheryl Hendricks, based at Pretoria University and co-director of the Centre of Excellence in Food Security hosted by UWC, is part of the Steering Committee on the UN Committee of Food Security.
