"Leadership In A Women's Way": Mary Robinson Delivers 4th Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture

The 4th annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture was held at the University of the Western Cape on Tuesday, 7 October - Archbishop Tutu's 83rd birthday.

The lecturer was Mrs Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Ms Robinson addressed the topic: Women at the Heart of Sustainable Peace

Mrs Robinson drew on her experiences – working as United Nations' Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's special envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa, and in the field of climate justice, in particular – to address the topic: Women at the Heart of Sustainable Peace. Mrs Robinson provided practical insights into what she calls, "leadership in a woman's way".

In her address on ‘Women at the Heart of Sustainable Peace’ she examined the kinds of initiatives required to ensure that women are at the forefront of peacebuilding. As President of the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, Mrs Robinson explores women’s participation in both the prevention and resolution of conflicts, and highlights the leadership role that women across all sectors of society are playing in efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change. In her concluding remarks, Mrs Robinson considered the question of women’s leadership: how women are leading, and how women can support each other by sharing experiences and sharing knowledge.

The Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture is an annual event presented by the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, in partnership with the University of the Western Cape. The lecture series was inaugurated by His Holiness The Dalai Lama (connected via satellite from India) in 2011. Subsequent lectures have been delivered by Ms Graca Machel (2012) and Mr Kofi Annan (2013).
