Schlumberger Limited provides free training to UWC students

Schlumberger Limited, the world's largest oilfield services company, has provided software training to 22 of UWC’s postgraduate Geology students at no cost to the University.

The Petrel NeXT course offers software training as part of an ongoing commitment by Schlumberger to support UWC’s Petroleum Geology programme in the form of software donation. The company has donated approximately 7 million USD worth of software to the University’s Geology department.

The software training, presented by Ms Leah Hoosain, a well-established geophysicist at Schlumberger Limited and a UWC alumna, is based on the Petrel software platform. There were two courses provided - Petrel Fundamentals and Petrel Geophysics - over the span of a week, and at the end of the course the students were presented with certificates to certify that they had completed the course.

Structured geology masters student Muazzam Hashim said, “the course was found to be very informative amongst students, bringing across the practical aspects of the  software as well as the theory behind subsurface modelling. Altogether this was found to be very proactive and interesting. These scarce skills offered by course will prove to be of great significance in the workplace and is personally seen as an investment in terms of forehand experience in with Petrel.”
