Phucula Programme Promotes Accounting Success

250 UWC accounting students are benefiting from a joint venture between UWC and FASSET to ensure improved marks and pass rates, and better adjustment to university level studies – not just academically, but holistically.

Phucula Training Provides Accounting Success For Undergrads ​

The Department of Education has found a staggering dropout rate at South African universities, where up to 30% of South African students drop out in their first year, while a further 20% leave university in their second.


The Phucula (“to improve”) programme aims to do something about this, improving accounting students retention and pass rates at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) by improving the ability of students to adjust and cope with university level accounting studies – not just academically, but holistically.

  

Aimed at black commerce students who are participating in the BCom General (majoring in accounting) and BCom Financial Accounting degrees, and who are in their first year of study, Phucula has been initiated by FASSET – the Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta) for Finance, Accounting Services, Management Consulting and other financial services.


The programme kicked off last month with a training and getting-to-know-you session enjoyed by dozens of students, and runs through to November 2015.

 

For the duration of the programme additional academic support will be provided to the 250 participating students in the form of extra tuition sessions for each module, formal mentoring sessions from senior students, access to additional prescribed text books and old examination and test papers, as well as exam preparation workshops. The programme will also cover soft skills such as study skills, time management and how to work in a team.

More experienced students can also benefit from the programme. Phucula will equip 2nd-year students with Pastel and Project Management training that will provide them with valuable skills – and an added advantage when applying for work. Third-year students will have the opportunity to hone their skills by mentoring others - a definite win-win situation.
