UWC Ladies FC and Banyana Banyana star Rachel Sebati’s “exemplary performance” has earned her both the Players’ Player of the Year and the Most Dedicated Player accolades recently in the women’s section at the annual presentations of UWC Football.

Sebati, a first-year BA student, was voted the most outstanding player by her peers after she helped her team win both the Safa Cape Town Coca-Cola Cup and the University Sport South Africa Western Cape Women’s Football league.

It is not only the central midfielder’s on-field work that grabbed the attention of her football colleagues; she is a people’s person too.

“She has an infectious personality and always applies a little humor to her game,” states one motivation for her nomination. “She loves to crack jokes and is a very well-liked player. She is a positive individual and this rubs off on the people close to her. She has great potential and possesses good leadership skills.”

The Players’ Player of the Year award for men went to star defender, Robin Swart, who helped his side defend the USSA Western Cape Men’s Football league and to finish in the top four of the Northern Suburbs Local Football Association. He also played an important role in the team performance in the Inaugural Varsity Football Competition in which he won man of the match in a game against TUT.

At the event, aimed at recognising exceptional footballers, Sebati’s teammate, Amanda Nkopho, received both the Player of the Year and the Most Consistent Player awards.

The ever hardworking midfielder, Thando Siwele, a Bcom student, took home the Player of the Year award. The team captain, Basikelele Mdletye (LLB), walked away with the Most Dedicated Player award, and a second year BA student, Mfundo Majola, received the Most Improved Player award, all in the men’s section.

Other awards presented include:

  • Most Improved Player (women) – Kayla Richards

  • Most Promising Player Jermaine Seposenwe

  • Best Newcomer – Kaylin Swart

  • Sportswoman of the Year – Leandra Smeda

  • Top Goal Scorer (women) with 33 goals – Leandra Smeda

  • Top Goal Scorer (men) with 18 goals – Thapelo Sixise
